Stair Runner or Fitted Carpet? An Honest Comparison

We sell both, so we have no reason to push you either way. Here is the honest comparison.

Choose a runner if…

• Your staircase is worth looking at. Original treads, painted sides, a nice newel post — a runner shows them off. Fitted carpet covers them completely.
• You want to change your mind later. A runner lifts out. Fitted carpet is gripper rods, underlay and a fitter.
• You like the look of a defined edge. Binding tape or wool whipping down each side gives a staircase a tailored finish that wall-to-wall cannot.
• You have wooden stairs you do not want to lose. This is the most common reason people call us.

Choose fitted carpet if…

• The staircase underneath is tired. If the treads are chipped, patched or an unloved shade of pine, a runner draws attention to the bare wood either side. Carpet hides all of it.
• You want warmth and quiet. Wall-to-wall is warmer underfoot and deadens sound better, because there is simply more of it.
• You have small children or an elderly relative. A full-width surface has no bare margins to slip on. This matters more than looks.
• Your stairs are unusually shaped. Lots of winders, a curve, or an open side can make a runner difficult to lay well.

What about both?

A very common order: a runner down the stairs, and a matching landing carpet at the top in the same range. You get the look of a runner where the staircase is on show, and full coverage where people actually stand about. The cost, honestly

A runner uses less carpet, but more labour — every edge is finished by hand. Fitted carpet uses more carpet and needs a fitter, gripper and underlay. For a typical UK staircase the two end up closer than people expect, and the decision is better made on how you want it to look than on price.
